Flash Gordon is an American football hero who is skyjacked aboard Dr. Hans Zarkov's rocketship along with his beautiful girlfriend Dale Arden. The threesome are drawn into the influence of the planet Mongo, ruled by Emperor Ming the Merciless. The evil Ming has been testing Earth with unnatural disasters, and deeming our world a threat to his rule. He also intends to take Dalehis concubine, attempts to execute Flash and intends to destroy Earth. Flash must avoid the amorous attentions of Ming's daughter, and unite the warring kingdoms of Mongo to rescue Dale and save our world.
The plot is taken right out of a comic book; hero rescues damsel in distress. To some this may give it away right there but performances from Topol, Max Von Syndow and Brian Best bring together a classic story that children and adults have loved for 3/4's of a century. It is well mixed with action, comedy and drama. One downfall of the movie is that the production value can not compete with the sci-fi movies made today. I first watched this movie at 16. I started it alone and by the end of the movie my whole family was watching it. It can definitely can be classifiedcheesy but this is a category that both good and bad movies can fall into. The original Star Wars movie is quite cheesy and so is the original Star Trek series but both are classics. This movie does not compare to them, but it shows the validity of good classic cheesy movies that the whole family can enjoy and this is what Flash Gordon is.
The two leads here basically ham-it-up, but the characters and film seem to be pulled directly from the old-comics. The NFL rock-head, the professional brunette, and the decorated Ming the Merciless.<br/><br/>BUT there's a point in all this craziness, when Sam Jones is basically wiping the floor with the enemies on the AJAX plane/ship, and the music from rock-gods Queen is quite literally shredding with Sam Jones, when the viewer(at least this one) could never have a bigger smile on his face.<br/><br/>All the sound editing is incredible too.<br/><br/>The film cannot be taken seriously, and it shouldn't be. It's almostif the film was made in the 50's, only the color-splash and the action thrust it into the 80's with all the flair and daring spectacle that both era's deserve to be remembered by.<br/><br/>Some would say that many of the lines are so bad, but If you understand that they were meant to be funny and ridiculous you might actually appreciate these little subtleties that make the film one of the most under-rated productions of all-time.<br/><br/>As FUNfun ever was.<br/><br/>I usually include my "you might like this if you liked____" list, but this is a one of a kind, and doesn't line-up next to much of anything in terms of comparisons and expectations.<br/><br/>81/100<br/><br/>Begs to be thrown in the time capsule.
